I had a busy weekend. I got married, had a kid, then another. I got a job, lost it, got another, and got promoted. I bought a new refrigerator, redid the bathroom, and learned to cook. I bought a new house, renovated it, and then set it on fire. Twice.
Fortunately the flames were just digital; I've been playing a preview build of The Sims 2, the amazing little "life simulator" from the mind of game designer Will Wright and the creativity of Maxis studios. I knew the addiction had set in midnight on Saturday, when I went downstairs literally just to shut off my computer, and decided to play out "one quick day, because my Sim is about to get promoted." Then I decided I had enough money to move, so I bought a new lot. And I thought, "I'll just sorta lay out the foundation for a new house -- just rough it out a little, before I go to bed." Pretty soon I was choosing carpeting. And then, well, the neighbors came over to welcome my Sim to his new home, so I had to throw a party. Then I realized it was 2:30 AM in real-life. Apparently I didn't even have the self-control to simply shut off my computer! That's when I realized that Maxis and EA have managed to capture the magic that made the original Sims such a PC gaming phenomena among gamers and non-gamers alike.
