Popular BitTorrent file-sharing site pulled

One of the internet's most popular file-sharing websites has suddenly closed up shop, likely a high profile victim of the lawsuits launched last week against those operating servers using the BitTorrent network.

In a message posted on SuprNova.org Sunday, the site operators said they were "closing down for good in the way that we all know it."

"We do not know if SuprNova is going to return, but it is certainly not going to be hosting any more torrent links," the operators said. "We are very sorry for this, but there was no other way, we have tried everything."

They added, however, that the site's discussion forums and internet chat servers would stay open.

Phoenix Torrents, another popular site, also recently announced it was pulling the plug while police raided a BitTorrent site based in Finland last week.

Instead of hosting files themselves, BitTorrent servers are pointers: they direct people looking for certain files to others who have them already. Also, each file is broken into parts, which allows a person downloading a specific file to also begin sharing it with another person. This allows for faster downloads because the bandwidth is shared.
