AMD today extended its Sempron budget CPU family, adding a part rated at 3000+ to its thin'n'light-oriented Mobile line-up.

Clocked at 1.8GHz, the new part contains just 128KB of L2 cache, paving the way for a 256KB L2 3200+ in the not-too-distant future. Like other Mobile Semprons for slimline notebooks, the 3000+ sports a 754-pin interface and incorporates its own Northbridge.

The 90nm chip offers 3D Now! and SSE 2 support, and can work with Windows XP Service Pack 2's 'no execute' anti-virus system, which guards against memory buffer overrun attacks.

AMD announced that PC makers Packard-Bell and Gericom had committed to ship notebooks based on the new chip in Europe, with an introduction "expected... in time for the holiday shopping season", AND said.

The Mobile Sempron 3000+ is available in volume now. AMD did not provide a price.
