Microsoft Corp. said sales of its Halo 2 video game, the sequel to the best-selling title for its Xbox video-game machine, topped 2.4 million in North America, generating $125 million on its first day.

The company, which is chasing rival Sony Corp. in the $22 billion market for video-game hardware and software, had sold more than 1.5 million advance copies of the game, which went on sale Tuesday.

“The sales have exceeded our wildest dreams,” said Shane Kim, general manager of Microsoft Game Studios. “I saw some incredibly excited people waiting in line for whom the clock was moving way too slowly on Monday night.”
