GLOBAL telecommunications giant Alcatel has invested $4 million building a centre of excellence in Sydney to focus on fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) broadband services.
Alcatel Australasia chief executive Andrew Young will announce the investment at an Australian Telecommunications Users Group (ATUG) forum in Canberra today.
The investment is a part of Alcatel's own increased focus on the fibre market. The company has stepped up lobbying of federal government to convince the major parties that Australia needs a national plan to achieve fibre-based broadband goals.
Alcatel is already involved with Telstra in deploying field pilots in Queensland based on fibre to the premises services.
Mr Young said the deployment of a fibre-to-the-premises network across Australia would be one of the largest infrastructure projects in the nation's history, and could only be achieved with government support.
