We know, we know, we can’t complain about the fact that as soon as we all upgrade to the latest and greatest (in this case, DDR2 SDRAM-enabled Sonoma laptops) someone else has something even better/faster/cheaper. (We all know our gear is obsolete in 15 minutes, but can’t we at least have a couple weeks where we don’t have to think about it?) In this case it’s Samsung, and their first 512MB DDR3 DRAM chip prototypes which pick up where DDR2 left off (667Mbps bandwidth), bringing the speed up to 1066Mbps. And did we mention it runs on 1.5 volts, compared to DDR2’s 1.8v (and DDR’s 2.5v)—good for batteries, good for you. And fret not, mon ami, we shan’t expect to see this hit the streets until at least this time next year, so you’ve got plenty of time to go hog wild on DDR2 before the bubble bursts.
