Macrovision, a content protection company, is readying the release of software that it hopes will make DVDs copy-proof. The software, called RipGuard DVD, was introduced in November of 2004, and is expected to be released today. Macrovision executives have indicated that although the company's technology may not stop all illegal copying, it can make it much more difficult.
The technology framework helping to protect the content will be unique to each DVD title. Additionally, Macrovision plans to monitor online resources to ensure that its methods are up-to-date. The company claims that RipGuard "affects the success of the most commonly-used ripping software products in the market. It has been effective in either completely obstructing the software or slowing it down to the point of futility."
