Testbed To Improve Internet2 Formed

The team behind Internet2 formally committed to its HOPI initiative, which will develop a national network testbed infrastructure designed to improve the next-generation network's performance.
The Hybrid Optical and Packet Infrastructure (HOPI) initiative said it would build a network testbed of HOPI nodes over the next three months, at sites such as Seattle, Chicago, and New York. All of the HOPI nodes will connect to the existing Abilene routers of the original network, the organization said.

In addition to the raw speed and throughput the Internet2 network offers, the links are also an opportunity to study the network's throughput, and how to improve it, in a laboratory-like environment. The group will experiment with new networking technologies such as dynamically provisioned bandwidth, circuit switched environments, and new transport protocols. Ultimately, the HOPI work will be the foundation for a new network beginning in 2007.

To accomplish this, each HOPI node will consist of an Ethernet switch with 10 Gigabit Ethernet capabilities, a fiber cross connect switch, and servers to control HOPI's network infrastructure and measure network performance, all designed to model future optical infrastructures, the group said.

Internet2 is backed by over 200 universities working with industry and government agencies.
