Finnish anti-virus firm F-Secure has discovered a new worm that targets smart phones. The new worm, dubbed Lasco.A by the firm, targets Symbian Series 60 devices such as the Nokia 7610 and Siemens SX1.
Similar to last month's Symbian worm Cabir.H, the Lasco.A worm used Bluetooth to propagate and transmit the infected .SIS file to other devices. The worm, however, does not transmit other infected files from the mobile devices so privacy is not a major concern.
The worm operates by first using Bluetooth to seek out another mobile device that is in Bluetooth discoverable mode. The worm then sends the Velasco.sis file that contains the worm to the other mobile device. Once the user accepts the Velasco.sis file and chooses to install it, the worm activates and repeats the cycle, searching for new devices to infect using Bluetooth.
According to F-Secure, the worm can only be sent to phones that support Bluetooth and are in discoverable mode.
