MUSIC outlet HMV has entered an agreement with ninemsn that will see the companies provide CD, DVD and download sales from the Microsoft joint venture's website.

The two companies would share branding and promotion both in-store and online, ninemsn managing director Martin Hoffman said.

However, ninemsn declined to provide details of the sales and advertising revenue sharing arrangements involved in the partnership.

Mr Hoffman said ninemsn was more concerned with its position in the online market than the total number of downloads it was selling. "The honest answer is that the business is pretty small right now, and every player that is in it and who is honest will say that."

However, the business was expected to grow substantially over the next five years, he said. "Our focus is to make sure that ninemsn's brand and service is positioned as the leading provider in that space.

"Our music sites - both the download site and the general interest site - remain very valuable media properties. They attract a big audience, and so we have a very profitable business in advertising."
