Using the Vantec Nexus
Switching on your pc you will instantly notice the lights surrounding the adjustment knobs on the panel. This is awesome effect and it really stands out to make your case look great. However it may be a different story if you own a white or bone coloured case.
This is the best shot I could do with my camera. The lights look ten times better in real-life.
You will eventually remember that you installed the lights and quickly switch them on. This is the effect that it had on my case even thought I don’t have any UV or Light reactive materials in there.
Using the lights is quite simple. Turn the knob it all the way to the right and the lights will stay on constantly. Turn the knob back to the left slowly until the lights turn off. This setting flicker’s the lights when a noise is made. So turn up your speakers and have a round of your favourite shoot-em-up and the effect produced is quite fun. It also sets a good atmosphere especially if you have your case on top of your desk. It could be used as a neat little strobe light if you use your PC for playing music.
Controlling fans is quite simple just twisting the knob will set the speed. The electronics controlling fan speed aren’t very accurate and I was quite annoyed with the unit’s ability to hold a large 120mm fan on a very low speed. But this is only a small problem as most people run all of their fans flat out anyway.
I would have also liked the twisting ‘weight’ of the buttons to feel a little bit heavier. The knobs feel cheap, light and plastic. A nice smooth ‘heavy’ feel would be excellent.
The Verdict
The Vantec Nexus Fan/Light kit has been put together really well and does a complete job at lighting and controlling your fans. The kit does exactly as it says and Vantec have addressed a few issues that other fan/light controllers have problems with. I can’t really fault the design of the unit for its purpose. If you bought this unit you would be very happy with its performance and its great looks.
