Creating and Configuring a Camera
To add a camera, simply click the big ‘+’ sign on the toolbar. The program then brings up this dialog box:
Here, we must configure the camera by giving it a name, IP address or network name, port (the port specified on the workers computer), archive location (for recording), capture interval and quality settings.
For testing purposes I only changed the Capture Interval and the Picture Quality settings. I think the best capture interval should be set to suit the application that it us used.
5 to 10 seconds is a good interval for closely monitoring a screen and using the recording mode. Any interval above 10 seconds would be useful when only an occasional glance is given to the software. The camera can be quickly paused to allow changes in settings to occur.
Quality Settings:
Picture Quality settings dictate the readability of the screen capture and also the amount of CPU used to take the screenshot and transmit it to the Chief computer.
Quality Level: 1
Quality Level: Standard
Quality Level: 100
Obviously the top quality level used the most CPU to take the screenshot (my Pentium 2.4GHz was using over 50% momentarily). However top quality would be useful to take a small quantity of quality screenshots, capturing a lot of detail.
As you can see from the example above, I wouldn’t recommend using Quality Level 1 for any reason. Text and most icons become unreadable and it is hard to tell exactly what the activities of the workers computer are.
The standard level of quality was adequate for most applications. It would be better used for taking a large amount of archived screenshots using the recording mode.
Multiple Viewing:
Hidden Camera also allows viewing of multiple cameras simultaneously. Up to 16 screens can be viewed at the same time. This is good for a large group of worker computers.
Even though the boxes seem to be small in size, they can still provide enough visual information for a specific activity to be monitored. However just as easily, you can double click on any box to instantly make a full screen view.
Conclusion:
I felt that the Hidden Camera software should include more features in the application and the user interface could be sharpened up a little bit more. However looking at the price of a license Hidden Camera is a very good option.
If you are able to understand the very simple concept of a network and know the slightest thing about IP addresses and port numbers, the Oleansoft Hidden Camera software delivers a very easy to use and configure screen capture program to suit any monitoring purpose. Configuration is easy as most of the default settings will work perfectly for most situations.
Pros:
- Easy to use
- Good configuration options
- Not easily noticable on "Worker" computers
