In Detail

Looking closer at the unit you will find that the base of the unit is constructed out of polished solid copper. Running from the base of the unit is 27 copper fins with 6 heat pipes running along the top of the unit. These are divided into 3 on each side.



The Coolermaster famous logo is featured at the top of the heatsink.



On the side of the heatsink screw holes are visible in order to attach the supplied clear fan which comes included within the kit, thankfully at no extra charge.

Installation

Installation of the unit was quite simple, however at times the included installation guide was quite difficult to understand, a minor flaw but never the less the unit was a breeze to install. We tested the install on an Intel Socket 478 motherboard.



One thing to notice about this heatsink is that it does not use the standard retention frame. The included kit however came with a retention kit for the Socket 478 and the AMD based motherboards.

The hardware which was used for the install was an Asus Motherboard. The retention frame was easy to remove from the board with only rubber mounting clips holding the frame in place, a simple exercise to remove.

Once the included retention frame was setup, it was simply a matter of inserting the CPU, applying the supplied thermal compound and then mounting the heatsink on top of the CPU.



A problem we found when attempting to mount the heatsink directly to the retention frame was the difficulty in doing so. The amount of pressure needed to apply to the retention clip was we felt excessive. This should be looked at it in the future by Coolermaster for the mounting of the heatsinks. Well at least you know its not likely to fall off, and it ensures that the heatsink is being utilised effectively against the CPU.



The installation of the heatsink went without any problems. A quick note to make was that the motherboard was removed from the case in order to install this thing, this was basically to install the retention frame which needs the base attached below the motherboard.

Conclusion

This heatsink is one of Coolermaster's beauties. It is greatly made and keeps the CPU alot cooler then the standard HSF, and appears to be one that stands out in the HSF market. We currently have it installed in our test rig and average CPU temperatures hover around the low 30 degrees Celsius. This is even on a 25 degrees Celsius day, so it sure is doing its job.

One thing I might mention is the fact that it was quite difficult to install from a fastening to the retention frame point of view, other then that its another great HSF from Coolermaster.
